Styling in Finicky Weather

We have all seen the memes about experiencing 4 seasons in one day, right?!

Early in Spring it is a very real problem. You may walk out the door wearing a sweater and then be sweating and uncomfortable later in the day when the temperature has risen 40 degrees IN ONE DAY!  So, what's a girl to do to stay stylish and comfortable with the swing in temperature?

My Fave Tips to Navigating Wild Temperature Swings

Layer Up

One of the best things that you can do during the transitional seasons like Spring is to layer up. Instead of grabbing a pull-on sweater to wear, choose something that can easily be removed. In my honest opinion, adding a third layer is almost a non-negotiable if you want to create a stylish look anyway!  Swap out your heavy sweaters for a button-up or open cardigan that goes with what you are wearing (or maybe even amps it up)!

If you can get away with wearing a denim jacket over your outfit (depending on your office requirements), that is a super stylish way to keep your temperature easily regulated. I also love adding a structured blazer over the top of a blouse, tank, or light sweater.  It refines even a dressed up pair of jeans.

Incorporate Color

Begin to incorporate color into your looks. For many women, winter is all about wearing heavy neutrals, so transition your look and create more of a spring vibe by adding some color.  Whether the colors in your ideal palette are soft pastels, bright and bold colors, or slightly more muted, this is the time to drag them off the hanger and put them on your body!  Color gives you an instant lift in your appearance and mood and can make both YOU and everyone around you more cheerful.  Who doesn't want happy co-workers to be around?!

Swap Your Outerwear

Instead of throwing on your heavy wool outerwear, begin to transition to your lighter-weight outerwear.  If you aren't adding color into your outfit, outerwear is a great way to spice up your look. There are so many great and fun trench coats, swing coats, and lightweight pieces that can create a fun springy feel as you walk out the door when it's a bit chilly in the morning.

Consider Your Feet

Your shoes can make a large impact on your outfit.  Instead of wearing heavy boots, you can start wearing fun ballet flats, which are all the rage this season. Grab some shoes that have a pop of color to them. It's a great way to add a fun pop when you get dressed. It's also time to start thinking about bringing out your wedges and stylish flat sandals (again, if work permits).  If you are ready for this, it's time to go get a pedicure. Your Stylist told you to. 😜

Play with Texture

Start to have fun with texture and natural fibers.  There are some really great linen/cotton blend pieces out right now. How fun to add a white linen blazer (or cream if you are warm) to your outfits?! You can also add a metallic skirt or pant to your closet.  Not only are metallics extremely on-trend, but they add a new shiny texture to what may be an otherwise boring look. You can also find satin skirts everywhere right now and you can pair them with a lightweight sweater to create some dimension into your daily outfit!

Spice Things Up with Patterns

Don't forget about pattern-play!  Spring clothes are so much fun if you just embrace them! Whether the patterns you find are more delicate and subtle or bold and head-turning, let's have some fun embracing color in this way, too. You can find a blouse that is mostly neutral, but has a thread of bold color running through it. Sometimes women are afraid of prints, but don't be!  Alongside, texture, they add a great dimension into your outfits that can take them to the next level!

I hope you can incorporate at least one or two of these ideas into your daily dress starting NOW!  It's April and we need to enjoy the layering while it's still comfortable enough to!

I have spoken quite a bit about adding color into your wardrobe in this post. Why Style is Important: The High Cost of Not Caring

Close your eyes. Transport yourself to a moment in time when you felt absolutely beautiful. Maybe it was yesterday. Maybe it was when you were heading to an special event. Maybe it was when you were going on your first date. Maybe it was your wedding day. When you close your eyes, think about these things: How did you look? How did you feel? What were you wearing? What was the fabric like? How did the clothes fit your body? What did your hair look like? What did your makeup look like? Were you smiling at yourself in the mirror? How long did it take you to get ready that day? Did you take pictures of yourself? What thoughts did you have when you saw yourself in the mirror? When you open your eyes, I want you to think about the last time you felt that amazing? That powerful? That beautiful?  When's the last time you cared like that? When's the last time you allowed yourself to take that long to get ready? As I shared in last week's blog ( https://stylesynchrony.blogspot.com/...

How to look stylish in your 40s (and beyond)

You're here! Congratulations because that is Step 1: Caring enough to want to make a change. Here's the thing, nothing changes if nothing changes. The biggest roadblock is if you aren't fed up ENOUGH with how you are feeling about your style (and likely yourself), you will never make a change. That's not you though, my friend, because you found this blog and opened it!  Step one is complete. Let's celebrate that! via GIPHY Here's what you already know. Style in your 40s and beyond (we will call this "midlife" going forward) is...different.  👉Our bodies are changing. Things don't sit where they used to. 👉Our priorities have changed. Most of the time, we aren't out all night at the bars. 👉Our lives have a new focus, oftentimes around our family. 👉Fashion and clothing is not typically geared toward women our age. It's commonplace for women who are in midlife to feel like they are lacking style or being left-behind, but that doesn't hav...

The Importance of a Conscious Closet (and what is it?!)

Many times as consumers, we look at our shopping habits when it comes to clothing in terms of how much we are spending, where we are spending our money and the comfort and wearability of our clothes.   These things are all relevant.   However, one area that is becoming increasingly important to consider for value-driven shoppers and for those who are concerned about the environment is the true impacts that our clothing purchases have on the future of Earth and the lives of humans living on it right now. Today is the first of a 2-part blog series about Fast Fashion versus Sustainable Fashion.  Whether you care about the environment or not, I heartily believe it is important for all of us to take a look at our decisions as consumers and understand these topics so we can make our decisions coming from a place of knowledge.  The decisions we make today will impact not just our own lives, but the lives of our children and grandchildren and cannot be ignored. Clothes cou...
