Effortlessly Chic: Mastering the Art of Casual Style

In a post-pandemic world, comfort has become king.  The fashion world has recognized this and has adjusted accordingly.  Here's the thing, when you dress casually, you still want for it to be in an "elevated casual" way.  So, what does that mean and how do you perfect that way of dressing?  I'm here to share just that in this week's post!

I actually consider myself a pretty casual dresser on the day-to-day.  I work from home and I have a young son, so I switch between getting more "dressed" for appointments to just being casual on days I don't have video calls and I'm sitting in front of the computer.  So, I truly understand elevated casual!

The first tip I have is to embrace quality basics.  This is not a cheap t-shirt and leggings.  I'm talking about buying good quality pieces that can handle a good deal of wear.

Next, you want to think about color schemes.  You should really make sure you stick to one base neutral to make it easy to mix and match.  Think black, brown, navy, tan, or white.  This allows for you to make easy selections each day.

Consider texture.  While you will have a base color, you can have different textures in both your base color pieces and the other casual pieces you have in your wardrobe. A great way to add texture to your base pieces is different fabrics.  When you get to your non-base pieces, consider adding fun prints.  Adding both texture and prints to your closet will help to elevate your casual look.

Fit is ALWAYS, ALWAYS key whether you are dressing casually or not.  It can 100% make or break your style.  And ready-to-wear is NOT actually ready-to-wear as I discussed in this blog post.  Impeccably fitting pieces are a must.

Layering is another way to add depth to your casual outfit looks. Since you want to keep your casual looks uncluttered, have fun playing with cardigans and jackets to take things up a notch.  Three pieces of clothing is always going to look better and more put together than one!

Don't forget about accessories.  In my honest opinion, this is a make-it-or-break-it moment.  This is a place where you can simply level up your look without adding a lot of weight or bulk.  You don't have to wear statement jewelry either.  Simple pieces with some sparkle can be enough.  Of course, if you love bold jewelry, that is a fantastic choice instead.  This category also includes scarves, belts, hats, and tights.  Have fun here.  Even if you keep your base outfit all one neutral color, you can add color in with your accessories without breaking the bank.

The final piece of the puzzle is SHOES!  You want to look for comfortable brands that keep things clean but elevated.  Loafers, elevated sneakers (not trainers), flat sandals with a little bling, shine, or fun details.  Ballet flats are also a great choice; ankle boots during the Fall are perfect.

The key to elevated casual is to balance simplicity with sophistication.  Marry the two together and you will get complimented on your casual style all of the time! Don't forget to carry your confidence with you because that is the most important accessory of all!

Here is a slideshow of some of MY favorite elevated casual looks on me!  I hope this will spark your creativity!

Stylishly Yours,

How to look stylish in your 40s (and beyond)

You're here! Congratulations because that is Step 1: Caring enough to want to make a change. Here's the thing, nothing changes if nothing changes. The biggest roadblock is if you aren't fed up ENOUGH with how you are feeling about your style (and likely yourself), you will never make a change. That's not you though, my friend, because you found this blog and opened it!  Step one is complete. Let's celebrate that! via GIPHY Here's what you already know. Style in your 40s and beyond (we will call this "midlife" going forward) is...different.  👉Our bodies are changing. Things don't sit where they used to. 👉Our priorities have changed. Most of the time, we aren't out all night at the bars. 👉Our lives have a new focus, oftentimes around our family. 👉Fashion and clothing is not typically geared toward women our age. It's commonplace for women who are in midlife to feel like they are lacking style or being left-behind, but that doesn't hav...

Color Contrast & YOU

Going back to your days in art, what do you remember about color contrast? When you use opposing colors to create art, it can be very visually appealing. This is particularly true if you are trying to create energy, excitement, drama, or tension in your artwork.  But what if you want to create a sense of calm, harmony, balance, or tranquility?  If you want to create those feelings, you will choose low contrast colors instead, or colors that are closer together in their depth or brightness. High Contrast Medium contrast Low Contrast As you can see in the images above, the High Contrast outfit is very bold and attention-grabbing. It's created by using 2 colors that are across the color wheel from one another. The Medium Contrast outfit has colors that are in the same color family, but still there is a relative difference in the depth of the colors. Finally, the Low Contrast outfit, while a bright color and high intensity, was created by using 2 colors that are very close t...

Understanding Color Analysis

Color Analysis is a hot topic right now. I don't think it has been this top-of-mind since the 1980s when Color Me Beautiful came out. Thanks to those TikTok filters, there has been a new resurgence of interest. I warn you against those filters. There are just some things that technology can't see, can't do and I wouldn't trust them over a trained eye. Now, you might be thinking, "Getting my colors done by a trained analyst is expensive and this is FREE." Well, my friend, you get what you pay for.  When you think about the impact that knowing your perfect colors has on your wardrobe, the fee is quite small. An accurate color analysis by a trained professional will help you save time and money when you shop. You will be able to build your wardrobe around these colors, which means you will spend LESS on clothing that doesn't suit you. MUCH LESS than the fee a trained color analyst charges. The opposite is true if you go by a free filter on TikTok. Do you REAL...
